A new 100-metre-high steel chimney located at the mouth of a fjord in Telemark County, Norway, captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from a historic cement factory.
The CO2 is then transported and stored in a geological repository in the North Sea. This project, described as “net zero”, aims to decarbonise the cement industry, a sector that is notoriously difficult to decarbonise. In detail, the chimney, a recent addition, is designed to capture the CO2 emitted by the Brevik cement plant.
After capture, the CO2 is compressed and transformed into liquid form to be transported by ship to an intermediate storage facility in Øygarden, north of Bergen.
From there, it is pumped and permanently stored in a geological repository located 2600 meters below the bottom of the North Sea. This process is part of a broader effort to reduce carbon emissions in the cement industry, an important step towards the ecological transition.
