And the results are alarming, although not surprising: the risk has increased by 40 percent in usually twenty years. Between 2002 and 2021, the period covered by the analysis, serious fires threatened as many as 440 million people globally. According to the scientists who authored the study, there is no doubt about the reasons for this sudden increase: in recent years, climate change has had an impact by sharply increasing the number of days “with conditions conducive to the development of extreme fires”. This is due to the fact that periods with extreme weather events have grown by 54 percent.

1.53 million deaths from smoke produced by fires

Finally, the analysis concludes that human activities also have an impact, along with climatic conditions. The latter, whether intentional or accidental, are responsible for 84% of the fires recorded in the United States and more than 90% of those that have occurred in Mediterranean Europe.

The fires affected 440 million people worldwide A study published on Thursday, August 21 in the American journal Science, analyzed what the exposure of the world population to fires is today.
